Washington County is the "Birthplace of Texas." In 1836, Sam Houston and 59 delegates gathered here to declare Texas an independent nation, breaking away from Mexico.

The county is home to Blinn College, Texas's first resident junior college. It's also conveniently close to Texas A&M University in College Station and Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View.
