Washington County is the "Birthplace of Texas." In 1836, Sam Houston and 59 delegates gathered here to declare Texas an independent nation, breaking away from Mexico.

This region of small, but growing communities retains pride in its heritage and extends a hearty Texas welcome to newcomers.

The county is home to Blinn College, Texas's first resident junior college. It's also conveniently close to Texas A&M University in College Station and Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View.
